I have always adored photos and photography. We lost our dad recently, and I realized how few photos we had of him. I found three of him as a child and a few as a young adult and some more recently, but not many. I still have a framed portrait of him and mom from the seventies in brightly colored collared shirts and matching suit jackets. This framed portrait is a treasure to me that I will cherish and pass down to my children. It really made me understand how important it is to get prints, wall art, or albums made that we can look at all the time and pass on in our family. Even though I have endless gigabytes of digital images, it will be much easier to pass on images on physical art, like canvas or metal print, than to pass it on digitally and hope generations will open and enjoy images on USB or in the cloud.
I came across this article by Declan O’Neil that discusses 6 reasons why photography is important:
He discusses what possessions people would grab from a burning house and a common answer is photo albums or a computer with digital images. I completely agree that I would grab my photo albums before I would grab anything else of value if there was a fire (after the family and pets of course). Especially those albums and photos that I do not have digitally. I also loved the part about photographs creating a legacy for later generations to find and enjoy.
